10 images

Lily, a 5-year-old Mexican-American girl, stays in the care of her cousin Teo while her mother leaves for a few days to work. Together they prepare a party for their Mexican father, who is waiting for his visa to visit her. However, the absence of the father figure is reflected in her dreams, a gap that Teo fills little by little through the confidence he must gain by entering the world of a small woman with her own individuality.

Notes from the Director

I like to think that cinema is a whole series of production elements that can be planned, however at the time of filming, all these elements become only a support for the magic of cinema to appear spontaneously, and for that you need patience to let things happen.“Lily” is a movie that came up when visiting Audrey Jean Delaney on her birthday, February 2018. When I saw how she expressed herself with a natural scenic talent being only 5 years old, I didn’t hesitate to want to work with her, directing her, it was like a challenge for me because she is also very restless. I know her house and her family and wrote her a story, which looks a bit like hers; that of a girl who fills a certain paternal gap in the male figures that appear in her life. The way in which Audrey play with Stephen, my partner and friend of her family, seemed to me of a beauty where there was authentic trust and brotherly love, full of laughter and joy, which I had not seen in a long time; It is more common to see and hear stories of violence and abuse. So I thought about making a movie where I could show that coexistence, with the tricks of the cinema. The next step was to find someone who had experience with the cameras, with whom I had already worked and with whom I also felt a friendly relationship; since I had to take a minimum crew with which we would have to film this movie inside Audrey’s house, in San Diego CA, for 15 days; so I thought about Tomás García Agráz, with whom I worked in my previous short. Another indispensable element was to think in the Director of Photography, J. Daniel Zúñiga, was a key piece for the film that I imagined in my head to happen; it was essential that there be a relationship of understanding beyond words and a love of brotherhood that would help consolidate a team willing to follow improvisation scenes that entered a field of docufiction.

We produced about 20 hours of material where we had to extract a 25-minute film that showed the essence of the relationship that was created between Tomás and Audrey during filming, a somewhat chaotic experience where “magic” arose as a result of the patience, sometimes in the 30th minute of running the camera and waiting for the essence I was looking for to happen. This extract, the edition, came to life in the sound design stage, thanks to Daniel Loustaunau, Andrés Arzate and the musical composition of Tomás himself, with whom we managed to find the sound world that completes “Lily <3”.
